An extraordinary and multi-sensory itinerary to discover the works and universe
of Mao Jianhua

Rome. – From 13th to 26th September, Rome’s Complesso del Vittoriano – Ala Brasini – under the aegis of the Istituto per la storia del Risorgimento italiano [Institute for the history of the Italian Risorgimento] and Patrocinio della Regione Lazio – will host the first phase of The Timeless Dance. Beyond the Mountains exhibition, curated by Martina Mazzotta: an extraordinary and multi-sensory itinerary to discover the works and values’ universe of Chinese Mao Jianhua.
Ninety-nine works depicting a spiral path, in seven stages divided into concepts and emotions – all accomplished with brush and ink on handmade cotton paper – vary in size ranging from small-size sheets to the most impressive roll that reaches seven meters in width.
Art and life are intertwined as never before in the character of Mao Jianhua, an entrepreneur who has long been engaged at international level and who, some ten years ago, was able to make a breakthrough in his own existence by starting an intense exploration of the cultural and spiritual foundations of a certain Chinese tradition. Accompanied by the constant presence of a Master, a spiritual guide, into exploring the deepest dimensions of one’s self and along with nature, without ignoring the context of Taoism and Zen Buddhism, Mao has undertaken the practice of meditation and isolation with discipline, he discovered the sympathetic relationship with nature through the sacred mountains, devoted himself to music, chess and, with surprising results, to calligraphy and painting. The result of this gradual process, that is always and still in progress, are his extraordinary landscape paintings – which can be framed in the broad spectrum of Shan Shui – that critically stimulate to consider the dimensions of China’s tradition and modernity. These are landscapes of the soul that we can all experience in the extraordinary black and white calligraphic brushstrokes, in the empty spaces that resound and in the dense graphic marks that transform themselves at glance, in the abyss of the mountains as in the airspace that overlooks the waters.
The itinerary engages visitors in a real timeless dance, on rediscovering their own heartbeats that resonate with the rhythms of nature in the enchanted mountains: those of Mao Jianhua.
